Summary: "Lavish"
An awesome book aboiut history that does not bore. Countless photos and interesting writing make this a book any history or Hollywood buff will enjoy. Others have written how well illustrated it is and how good the research is and I have to agree. A necessary book for the film fan.

Summary: "The definitive book on the history of the "city" of Hollywod"
For anyone who is seriously interested in the history of the quasi-city known as Hollywood (as opposed to "Hollywood" - the concept for the world of movies in general). This book goes into a level of detail almost unparalleled in any other book on any other "city". From pristine lemon groves and Victorian mansions, to posh golden age nightclubs, to skid row blight and to a final sort of rebirth, the author traces the story with mind blowing photos and fascinating research (which contrary to some other reviews I found to be quite accurate). Strangely, now as I walk down Hollywood Blvd. I can actually close my eyes and visualize what once was. This is a must have book, not only for movie lovers and Los Angeles historians, but for anyone fascinated with how urban areas evolve and why historic buildings such be preserved and cherished.

Summary: "The Story of Hollywood:An Illustrated History"
The Story of Hollywood is such a great book. I lived in LA from 1974-1988 and got to know it pretty well. Reading about so many streets, businesses, names and where they came from, how they got started is so interesting!!
Heartbreaking, too, to see how beautiful the land was before it became covered in buildings, like much of California. Born and raised in California, I find this book an important part of my own personal history. Mr. Williams did an extraordinary job of researching photographs and text. He managed to take a lot of facts and true to Hollywood, wove them into an entertaining and interesting story. Nicely printed and bound. If you are interested in Hollywood for any number of reasons, then this book should be in your library!

Summary: "Amazing!"
The Story of Hollywood is definitely one of my all-time favorite books. For the true Hollywood history fan, it is jam-packed with detailed information of the origins of Hollywood, through the years, and recent information as well. I really enjoyed reading this book and the photos are amazing. It really offers so much information and helps you understand the real Hollywood and where it came from. It also sheds light on the terribly unfortunate "revitalization/restoration" that has removed so much history from the town. A MUST MUST for any true Hollywood history fan.
